I was
The insect tapping at your window
Late one night last summer
Hoping you might
Notice the small noise of a tiny body
Throwing itself against that great glass wall
Did you?
Did you pull back the shades
To see that special way a summer night holds itself?
Was it light enough to see the ground
Or where the fireflies flashed in the trees?
I remember perfectly
Drinking up my energy
For that faint tapping sound
And where it all stopped
The pinpoint of cognizance
Did you open your eyes to the heavy darkness
That tiny wings flashed against?
Did you understand the rhythm
That pressed against your lungs?
I was small
But in fact I felt everywhere
I felt wrapped in the air around you
The omni-cognizance of a soul stretched out in the heat
Is still so vivid in my memory
As I pull in
These empty dregs of cold thin air
